The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026 once again proved why it is one of the world’s greatest celebrations of motorsport and automotive innovation. Bringing together iconic classic cars, the latest performance models and exciting concept vehicles, the annual event offered enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the past, present and future of motoring in one unforgettable location.
Ocean was delighted to attend this year’s event, and one manufacturer that truly stole the show was BMW. The BMW Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026 stand perfectly balanced the brand’s rich motorsport heritage with its ambitious electric future, showcasing everything from the legendary BMW M3 E30 to the spectacular UK debut of the revolutionary BMW M Concept Neue Klasse.
BMW M Concept Neue Klasse Makes its UK Debut
Without question, the biggest attraction on the BMW stand was the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse. Making its UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026, the concept provided an exciting glimpse into the future of BMW M and what enthusiasts can expect from the next generation of high-performance electric vehicles.
The technology behind the concept is nothing short of remarkable. Featuring four independently controlled electric motors, each powering an individual wheel, the innovative drivetrain works alongside BMW M Dynamic Performance Control to deliver exceptional levels of grip, agility and precision. Rather than simply replacing a combustion engine with electric motors, BMW has completely reimagined how an M car can perform, creating a vehicle capable of responding instantly to changing road and track conditions.
The design is equally impressive. Sharp lines, a distinctive pointed front end and a beautifully integrated ducktail rear spoiler give the concept a purposeful appearance while also serving important aerodynamic functions. Every surface has been designed with performance in mind, demonstrating how form and function work together within BMW’s new Neue Klasse design philosophy.
The concept also signals the future direction of the BMW M3, combining innovative materials, lightweight construction and advanced electric performance while retaining the driving dynamics that have defined BMW M for more than five decades.
BMW’s Expanding Electric Line-up
Alongside the stunning concept car, BMW showcased an impressive range of new electric vehicles that demonstrate how rapidly the company is expanding its zero-emission portfolio.
Among the highlights was the all-new BMW iX5, built using sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology. Equipped with a newly developed high-voltage battery, the iX5 offers an impressive driving range of around 500 kilometres on a single charge while delivering the premium refinement and practicality expected from BMW’s flagship SUV range.
The luxurious BMW i7 M70 xDrive also attracted plenty of attention throughout the weekend. As the performance flagship of BMW’s electric luxury saloon range, the i7 M70 xDrive produces an incredible 680 horsepower, combining breathtaking acceleration with exceptional comfort and cutting-edge technology.
Visitors also had the opportunity to explore the recently launched BMW iX3, further strengthening BMW’s growing line-up of fully electric SUVs.
First UK Appearance of the BMW i3 50 xDrive
Another exciting highlight was the first UK appearance of the all-new BMW i3 50 xDrive ahead of its official global launch.
Already generating significant interest since its international unveiling earlier this year, the BMW i3 50 xDrive represents the second production model based on BMW’s revolutionary Neue Klasse platform.
The launch model, known as the BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition, offers an impressive electric driving range of up to 563 miles, placing it among the longest-range electric saloons currently announced.
Based on the popular M Sport specification, the First Edition includes a wealth of premium features as standard, including M Sport exterior styling, BMW Iconic Glow illumination, the innovative BMW 3D Head-Up Display and AC Charging Professional, increasing AC charging capability from 11kW to 22kW. Available to order from £57,905 OTR, the new model highlights BMW’s confidence in the future of premium electric mobility.
Celebrating 40 Years of the BMW M3
The Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026 also marked an important milestone for BMW as the company celebrated 40 years of the BMW M3.
Displayed proudly on the stand were two of the most significant cars in the M3’s history. The original BMW M3 E30, first introduced in 1986 as a homologation model for touring car racing, remains one of the most iconic performance cars ever produced.
Alongside it sat the extremely rare BMW M3 GTS (E92) from 2011. Developed as the ultimate track-focused version of the V8-powered M3, the limited-production GTS demonstrated how the model had evolved while remaining true to its motorsport roots.
Seeing both cars displayed alongside the futuristic BMW M Concept Neue Klasse perfectly illustrated four decades of continuous innovation and engineering excellence.
BMW M Motorsport Takes on the Goodwood Hill Climb
Away from the exhibition stand, the action continued on Goodwood’s famous 1.16-mile hill climb.
BMW Group Classic brought together an outstanding collection of competition cars, including the spectacular BMW M3 GTR E46, driven by Dirk Adorf, and the BMW M3 DTM E92, piloted by Jens Klingmann.
Fans were also treated to the unmistakable sound of the legendary McLaren F1 GTR, powered by BMW’s iconic 6.1-litre S70/2 V12 engine, while the beautiful BMW M3 Alpina E30, driven by Peter Oberndorfer, added another historic highlight to the programme.
The latest generation of performance machinery was equally impressive. The BMW M2, equipped with the new M Performance Track Kit, demonstrated improved agility, sharper handling and enhanced circuit capability as it attacked the hill climb.
BMW M Motorsport driver Kelvin van der Linde also thrilled spectators behind the wheel of the incredible BMW M3 Touring 24H, fresh from its SPX class victory and remarkable fourth-place overall finish at this year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours.
A Special M3 Anniversary Parade
Thursday’s programme featured one of the festival’s most memorable moments as BMW celebrated the M3’s 40th anniversary with a unique hill climb parade.
For the first time, one example from every generation of the BMW M3 tackled Goodwood’s famous course together. Featuring privately owned examples alongside vehicles from the BMW UK Classic Fleet, the display showcased the remarkable evolution of one of the world’s greatest performance cars and proved why the M3 continues to set the benchmark for driving enthusiasts.
The Home of the Ultimate Driving Machine
BMW’s impressive exhibition space, fittingly named The Home of the Ultimate Driving Machine, offered visitors far more than static displays.
Guests could experience racing simulators, test their reactions on the BMW Motorrad rolling road and enjoy a programme of fascinating live interviews hosted by motoring presenter Vicki Butler-Henderson.
Joining her throughout the festival were Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, together with BMW designers and engineers responsible for bringing the BMW M Concept Neue Klasse to life. Their insights into the future of BMW M provided visitors with a unique behind-the-scenes look at the development of the company’s next generation of performance vehicles.
Ocean Showcases the Restored Benetton B186 Formula One Car
One of the proudest moments of the weekend for Ocean was being invited to showcase our fully restored 1986 Benetton B186 Formula One car.
The Benetton B186 occupies an important place in Formula One history. Powered by BMW’s legendary turbocharged engine, it secured BMW’s final turbo-era Formula One victory at the 1986 Mexican Grand Prix. That race also marked the first Formula One win for both Gerhard Berger and the Benetton team.
Watching the beautifully restored car return to action at Goodwood, driven by Christian Danner, was a truly unforgettable experience and a fitting tribute to one of BMW Motorsport’s greatest racing machines.
BMW Looks to the Future
Our visit to the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2026 perfectly demonstrated BMW’s ability to honour its remarkable heritage while embracing the future with confidence.
